PRESS RELEASE: Transit Disruption, and Upcoming Elections with Referendum.
Dear Students,
Transit Disruption March 9-11, 2023:
Following our previous press release on February 17th, 2023 regarding BC Transit disruption, we have been advised that the CUPE 561 has served notice to First Transit of further strike action.
There will be no public transit services operation from Thursday, March 9 – Saturday, March 11th, 2023, this includes Fraser Valley services in Chilliwack, Abbotsford, and the surrounding region. which may impact you as a U-Pass Holder. This does not include HandyDART services.
We are monitoring the situation and know that this is both inconvenient and frustrating for our U-Pass holders. If you would like to read more on the job action, please visit CUPE 561’s webpage.
We continue to recommend that you prepare by exploring alternative forms of transport to campus for these days and notifying your instructor regarding any missed classes or late arrivals due to the strike.
Potential Transit Walkout: March 20, 2023:
In addition to the above, CUPE 561 has provided notice that if no deal is reached by 20th March, a full walkout will begin. This means that BC Transit services in the Fraser Valley will cease to operate until the dispute is resolved. This means that there is the possibility that there may be no public transit services operation from 20th March until further notice throughout the Fraser Valley including services in Chilliwack, Abbotsford, and the surrounding region. This includes the HandyDART, except for essential services.
SUS is in regular communication with BC Transit and UFV and will update you on further information as we receive it. We recommend monitoring our social media for any urgent notices.
