PRESS RELEASE: Statement on the Conduct at Diwali 2024
The UFV Student Union Society (SUS) is committed to building a safe, engaging, and inclusive community on campus through the careful planning and hosting of a wide range of events throughout the year. Our goal is to provide students the opportunity to connect with one another and to create memorable experiences that uphold our values and principles. We are profoundly disappointed by the disrespectful and harmful behavior exhibited by some members of our campus community at last night’s Diwali celebration. Such conduct not only disrupts the positive intentions of the event but also undermines the hard work of those who put effort into creating a space for celebration and cultural appreciation. SUS expects all participants of our events to uphold a high standard of respect. We would like to thank the students and supporters who respectfully participated, as it is disheartening to witness actions that compromise the safety and enjoyment of others. SUS places the safety and well-being of our staff, volunteers, partners, and students at the highest impor-tance. We have zero tolerance for any form of abuse, harassment, or mistreatment directed towards any of those involved in our events. Our team worked diligently to make this event welcoming and enjoyable for everyone, and it is unacceptable that they experienced any form of disrespect. We will continue to prioritize the safety of those involved in our events and will take all necessary steps to prevent similar issues from arising in the future. This experience has prompted a re-evaluation of our event registration and participation processes. Our goal is to ensure that our events remain safe spaces where students with genuine intentions can fully engage and enjoy themselves. Moving forward, SUS will implement measures to better protect our staff, volunteers, and participants, ensuring that future events reflect the positive and inclusive community we seek to build.
