PRESS RELEASE: Update From the President: Fall at a Glance

UFV Students,

I hope everyone has had a great start to the fall semester and that we are making it through midterms with confidence! We at SUS have been working on some exciting things this fall, and we are thrilled to share them with you here.

Fraser Valley Express Route 66

We have spent the last few months in discussions with BC Transit regarding the follow-through on the pilot of the Fraser Valley Express Route 66 (FVX66) UPASS extension for UFV students. BC Transit has now expressed hesitancy to pursue the UPASS pilot due to overcrowding, reliability, and safety concerns on the FVX. BC Transit added a new bus to the route in September to address demand, but they claim most routes remain full. They have now requested for us to revisit discussions in 2025, but SUS is currently advocating to solidify a commitment in writing before the end of the academic year. FVX66 remains top of mind and top of priority for SUS and while the project continues to experience delays outside of SUS’ control, we are committed to pursuing every avenue to further the project. More details will follow once we have further information.

Get Out The Vote

Are you passionate about the issues affecting students and the community? It is not too late to vote in the 2024 BC Provincial Election! SUS has secured on-campus voting in S1116 (Evered Hall) from 8:00am-8:00pm on October 15th and 16th. If you cannot make it on those days, final day for voting is October 19th at your local polling station! Voting in the provincial election is the best way to make sure that student concerns such as education affordability and accessibility are addressed by the government. If you have any questions about voting in this election, check out https://elections.bc.ca/2024-provincial-election/ for more information.

Increased Clubs and Associations Funding

This year, we made a commitment to help bring the UFV spirit to life by increasing funding for established Clubs and Associations (C&As). Once a C&A has completed its first annual re-registration package, funding eligibility will increase from $1000 to $1500 per year. This increased funding will empower C&As to host larger, more engaging events, enhance their programming, and offer new opportunities for student involvement. This initiative aims to strengthen community on campus, making it easier for students to meet fellow students, explore their passions, and get connected.

Events

We hope that everyone had the chance to enjoy themselves at Kickback 04 and at our many September activities at the start of the year! If you have not been able to make it out to our events so far, there are still plenty of upcoming events over the next two months to bring some fun onto campus! Upcoming this month we have our Halloween Patch and Paint, Abbotsford Canucks Rush Night, and Diwali Celebration! Keep an eye out in November for Bunny Yoga, Cultural Market, and more! All dates and times for upcoming SUS events can be found at https://ufvsus.ca/events. We will see you there!

There are even more exciting things happening daily at SUS, so be sure to keep an eye on our social media accounts and look out for more updates like this one coming soon. Thank you all for your support and your commitment to being the life of UFV! We are looking forward to an action-packed rest of the fall semester, and to an even more exciting 2025.
