UFV Student Union Society Hosts Municipal Candidates Mixer

On Friday, October 2, the University of the Fraser Valley Student Union Society (UFVSUS) hosted its Municipal Candidates Mixer in Evered Hall at UFV. The event brought together candidates running for mayor and Abbotsford City Council, UFV students, and members of the wider community for an opportunity to connect, exchange perspectives, and discuss issues affecting the city.

The event was moderated by Dr. Hamish Telford, Associate Professor of Political Science at UFV. Each participating candidate was given an opportunity to introduce themselves, outline their campaign platforms, and share their priorities for Abbotsford. Following the introductions, attendees were invited to mingle with candidates over coffee and tea, ask questions, and engage in informal conversations about the future of the community.

The mixer provided an opportunity for students to hear directly from local candidates and learn more about their positions on issues that affect both the broader Abbotsford community and the UFV student population. Discussions touched on several important municipal priorities, including public transit, recreation, affordability, and community safety. These issues are particularly relevant to students, whose experiences with transportation, access to public spaces and facilities, housing costs, and safety can shape their ability to participate fully in campus and community life.

By creating a space for direct engagement between candidates and students, UFVSUS aimed to make local politics more accessible and encourage students to take an active interest in municipal decision-making. Municipal governments make decisions that influence many aspects of daily life, from transportation infrastructure and recreation facilities to housing development and neighborhood safety. Opportunities to hear from candidates firsthand can help students better understand the choices facing Abbotsford and the priorities of those seeking elected office.
