PRESS RELEASE: UFV SUS Announces H&D Referendum Question and Board Updates

Dear Students,

Health & Dental Referendum Question:

On behalf of the SUS Board of Directors, I am writing to inform that the UFV Student Union Society is preparing to hold a referendum on an important matter related to your Health and Dental Plan. We are proud to provide a Health and Dental plan that remains among the most competitive in the country. While the fee has not changed in over 12 years, the cost of delivering quality health coverage has increased over time. This referendum gives students the opportunity to support a fee adjustment that keeps current benefits in place and ensures the plan remains stable and sustainable moving forward.

The referendum question will be as follows:

“The Health and Dental Plan fee has remained unchanged for 12 years. Do you support increasing the fee to $249 per year, with CPI indexing, to maintain current benefits? An option to opt-out will remain available for students with equivalent coverage.”

Even with a proposed increase, the SUS Health and Dental Plan will remain one of the most affordable student health plans in the country. From prescriptions and eye exams to dental care, physio, and mental health supports, this plan is here to cover you up while you are at UFV.

You will still have the option to opt out if you already have equivalent coverage, giving you flexibility while keeping strong, affordable coverage available for students who need it.

The referendum will run March 2–5 during the 2026 SUS Annual Elections. We will be out on campus leading up to the vote with Q&A sessions where you can ask questions and get a clear picture of what is being proposed. This decision affects students directly, so we want to make sure you feel informed before casting your vote.

Updates from the SUS Board of Directors:

Following are some recent governance updates from your SUS Board of Directors:

In December 2025, the Board of Directors voted to remove Gagan Mann, Student Representative At-Large, from the board following a Board decision made in accordance with the society’s governing procedure.

Additionally, Taj Sharma resigned from the position of SUS Vice President Internal in January 2026. In accordance with SUS Bylaw 20.9, the Board has appointed Tanvir Hundal to serve as SUS Vice President Internal for the remainder of the term. The Board thanks Taj for his work with SUS and wishes him the best in his future endeavors.

The UFV Student Union Society remains committed to transparent governance and ensuring students have a strong voice in decisions that affect their university experience. More updates will follow later in the term. For any questions, concerns and thoughts, please email Bilal at president@ufvsus.ca.
