PRESS RELEASE: Transit Disruption Update and Congratulations to 2023 Graduates.
Dear students,
It has been an exciting start to the 2023/2024 term for the new SUS Executive team and Board of Directors! I look forward to leading our team this year in our work in advocacy and engagment on campus.
Transit Disruption Update:
We received positive news on the progression of the BC Transit Strike in the Fraser Valley. This ongoing strike has had a severe impact on UFV students, who rely on these services to get to and from classes, work and other commitments. SUS has been advocating for the BC Ministry of Labour to intervene in the labour dispute between CUPE 561 and First Transit in order to see the return of transit services that students in the Fraser Valley rely on.
We were happy to receive news that BC Minister of Labour, Harry Bains, appointed Vince Ready as a special mediator in the ongoing dispute. We hope to see this result in a timely resolution of the negotiations between CUPE 561 and First Transit. As well, we are working towards receiving a refund of 30 cents per day per student for Summer semester U-Pass holders. We look forward to bringing you an update on this soon.
Congratulations to 2023 Graduates:
On behalf of the Student Union Society, I would like to extend our congratulations to all of the 2023 graduates on their accomplishments achieved at UFV! We are so excited for all of you in completing your programs and moving onto the next step in your careers. We wish all graduates the best in their future pursuits.
In other news, we have exciting updates about our shuttle service and upcoming events. We are happy to announce that we began a new contract for our shuttle service between the Abbotsford and Chilliwack campuses, which will allow for the expansion of hours for the shuttle service. We hope to see you at our upcoming Summer Fest events on June 26th and July 17th, where we will have live music, food trucks and games on the green at the Abbotsford campus.
Keep an eye on our website and social media to stay up to date with our upcoming events and advocacy!
Sincerely,
ASHLEY MCDOUGALL
PRESIDENT
