PRESS RELEASE: Notice of Potential Transit Disruption
Dear Students,
We are writing to advise you that CUPE 561 has served a strike notice to First Transit. First Transit is a private,
for-profit, sub-contractor of BC Transit that provides transit service throughout the Fraser Valley services
in Chilliwack, Abbotsford, and the surrounding region. The membership includes drivers, utility workers, bus
washers, and mechanics.
First Transit has communicated publically that they intend to strike on Monday, February 27th, and Tuesday,
February 28th (excluding essential HandyDART services). If the strike goes ahead this means that there will be no public transit services operating on February 27th and 28th operated by BC Transit, which may impact you as a U-Pass Holder.
We are in continued discussions with BC Transit to ensure we are kept up to date on the situation and with UFV to ensure that appropriate provisions are made for students during this time. Please see the communication from UFV regarding recommendations for those attending classes on these days.
While we hope this dispute will be resolved, we do recommend that you prepare by exploring alternative forms of transport to campus for these two days, and notifying your instructor regarding any missed classes or late arrivals due to the strike.
All updates will be posted on our website at ufvsus.ca.
