PRESS RELEASE: September 2023 Update - Welcome to the Fall Semester, U-Pass Summer Fee Credit, By Election.
Dear students,
I hope you have all had a great start to the Fall 2023 semester! On behalf of SUS, I want to extend a warm welcome to you all back on campus this Fall.
Throughout the summer, your SUS Executive team has been planning and hosting events such as Summer Sports Showdown, Summer Fest, and Backyard Flix. Our team has also been hard at work planning for Kickback, happening September 21st at the Abbotsford campus out on the green! It’s not too late to get your free ticket to enjoy the food trucks, activities, beer garden and enjoy the last taste of summer.
I’d also like to share about some of our advocacy initiatives over the Summer. The SUS Executive team had the opportunity to meet with the BC Minister of Post Secondary Education and Future Skills, Hon. Selina Robinson, Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Pam Alexis, and MLA Kelli Paddon, during their visit to UFV’s Abbotsford campus. We raised issues impacting UFV students such an housing, unpredictability of international tution, food insecurity, financial aid and campus sexualized violence. In addition to this, we advocated for the return of transit services in the Fraser Valley, which were suspended due to labour action, through media and letters to the BC Ministry of Labour.
Now that BC Transit has resumed service, we are able to provide a refund to students who paid U-Pass fees in the Summer 2023 semester. If you paid U-Pass fees for the Summer 2023 semester, you will receive a refund of $37.62 to your student account, which is the Transportation Services portion of the U-Pass.
Finally, for those of you looking to get involved at SUS, we are running a by-election to fill 8 vacant at-large Student Representative positions on the SUS Board of Directors. We are looking for students who are engaged and committed to representing the student body on the Board of Directors. If this is you, I highly encourage you to submit a nomination; it’s a great way to get involved and connected with SUS and fellow students.
Nominations are open until September 29th.
