2020 is an exceptional year that calls for an exceptional election. Given the global pandemic that is affecting us all, The SUS Elections' is putting its resources into developing an online format to facilitate for all candidates to reach the student body. Part of this is our online Candidates Q&A project.
Out of concern for the safety of our candidates and the student body, we have asked the candidates of this year's SUS' General Election to take the time to respond to the questions that have been graciously submitted by the student body. Each candidate has been given appropriate time to respond thoughtfully to a set of questions specific to the position for which they are running.
This website will provide students a chance to get to know the candidates' platforms and their personalities. We encourage participation in the election by further engaging with the candidates' online campaigns and voting online April 5th-9th." -

GENERAL QUESTIONS :

WHAT TYPE OF LEADER WOULD YOU BE?

I would be a leader that sets down a solid foundation for the students and student leaders of the future to continue to work while moving forward. I will lead by example, and ensure that no one may use power or authority for their own benefit for the years to come.

HOW WOULD YOU ENSURE COORDINATION AND COMMUNICATION BETWEEN SUS AND UFV?

I will ensure that talks between the president of SUS and UFV are always carried out in a way that allows both entities to flourish. Specifically, I hope to improve communication between SUS and some departments of UFV that we are unable to coordinate and/or communicate with currently.

HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE THE ROLE OF THE PRESIDENT?

I believe the president’s role is one that ensures what is best for our membership (students). A role that entails putting in work to show our membership why we exist, and help them grow as much as possible in their time spent here. Less than managing just the organization, the president must be the voice and the reason that leads the organization in a way that the membership agrees with.

DISCUSS SUS’S COOPERATION WITH THE CANADIAN ALLIANCE OF STUDENT ASSOCIATIONS. IS IT AN IMPORTANT CONNECTION FOR THE UFVSUS? (KEEP IN MIND YOUR ROLE AS PRESIDENT IN THE COOPERATION WITH CASA)

Our work with CASA is a wonderful addition onto our list of accomplishments on a national level. However, I do not believe that the UFVSUS should hold onto our connection with this organization. With UFV being as small of a campus as it is, I feel that it is a much better use of our time, and ESPECIALLY resources to focus on issues affecting us directly on a provincial level, as well as within the university.

CANDIDATE SPECIFIC QUESTIONS :

SUNNY : FINANCIALS ARE UNDER THE PORTFOLIO OF THE VPI; CAN YOU EXPLAIN WHAT YOU WOULD WANT THE ROLE OF THE PRESIDENT TO LOOK LIKE IN THAT AREA ? (BASED ON YOUR STATEMENT)

Although “finances” are under the portfolio of the VPI, being the main outlet of information being communicated, and ensuring that the organization stays accountable for doing what they should be based on our mission is the job of the President. As the president, I want to make sure that where we are choosing to spend our money isn’t somewhere that isn’t helping our membership receive what they feel that they want/need. Rather than managing our finances and our financial statements, I hope to simply ensure that we aren’t spending money on an area when it could be used somewhere else to help benefit the students of UFV much more.

CONCLUDING STATEMENT :

In 30 words or less, give us a final pitch why students should vote for you

I will form the ultimate stepping stone to ensure SUS will continue to rise and help our students better than ever before!

GENERAL QUESTIONS :

WHAT TYPE OF LEADER WOULD YOU BE?

As an ISFP, my leadership skills present themselves in a mediator fashion. This means that when issues arise, my main objective is to ensure that all groups involved have the opportunity to voice their concerns and ideas prior to any decisions being made.
In previous leadership roles, my contribution presented itself in my ability to strengthen a team by welcoming each person’s diverse perspective and skill-set while also promoting an environment that supports and encourages personal development and accountability, especially during times of adversity.

HOW WOULD YOU ENSURE COORDINATION AND COMMUNICATION BETWEEN SUS AND UFV?

Since taking on the role of Event Coordinator at SUS, I've already had the opportunity to work alongside the university for several events including the 2019 New Student Orientation. This event required constant collaboration from many departments and individuals at all stages. This also gave me the experience of working alongside the two different organizations to execute a highly successful event even with it the increasing challenges of an unprecedentedly high number of attendees.

HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE THE ROLE OF THE PRESIDENT?

To me, the role of the President is to serve all UFV students and help establish action that can continue to be expanded on and improved upon by others in future years. The President should consistently connect with students to develop a more in-depth understanding of what students really want and need and use creative thinking to find solutions. Ultimately, any person filling the role of President must have the confidence, leadership skills and strong work ethic it takes to successfully represent and advocate for all students.

DISCUSS SUS’S COOPERATION WITH THE CANADIAN ALLIANCE OF STUDENT ASSOCIATIONS. IS IT AN IMPORTANT CONNECTION FOR THE UFVSUS? (KEEP IN MIND YOUR ROLE AS PRESIDENT IN THE COOPERATION WITH CASA)

CASA is a crucial connection to UFVSUS. Lead by students, many of us have never heard of it (including myself until starting at SUS) but that doesn’t take away from their importance:

The overall mission is advocating for students using policy development and research, awareness campaigns, government relations, and partnerships with other stakeholders. The vision is for Canada to have an accessible, affordable, and high-quality education system whose students enjoy an excellent quality of life.

Example of their impact: Increasing student grants (non-repayable portion) by 50% in 2016. I encourage you to learn more for yourself at www.casa-acae.com

CANDIDATE SPECIFIC QUESTIONS :

JESSICA: Could you explain more about the WeUFV referenced in your candidate statement and what that stands for?

Working as the Event Coordinator at SUS, I’ve had numerous opportunities to connect with students from varying educational tracks regarding what they hope to see more of at UFV, as well as what frustrates them. As a student myself, I know firsthand what it’s like attending UFV and now realize most of us want similar things. WEUFV was established for students to:

  • Be apart of the decision-making process. Not simply informed after-the-fact
  • Establish more effective methods to gather and to share ideas
  • Have our voices heard when expressing frustrations to drive change
  • Give students reasons to want to stay on campus outside of class time #campusculture
  • Build and strengthen a student lead campus community that collaborates and innovates

CONCLUDING STATEMENT :

In 30 words or less, give us a final pitch why students should vote for you

My strong leadership skills, passion for helping others and past experiences working at SUS and with UFV are why I feel confident in asking for your vote as SUS President.

GENERAL QUESTIONS :

WHAT TYPE OF LEADER WOULD YOU BE?

A good one. All kidding aside I hope to be someone who people can connect and relate with. I want everyone to feel like I am actually working towards solving issues that people care about. I won’t make excuses for why things aren’t getting done. I will get things done.

HOW WOULD YOU ENSURE COORDINATION AND COMMUNICATION BETWEEN SUS AND UFV?

Communication and coordination shouldn’t be a new concept. It is quite easy to achieve both those things through frequent meetings and check-ups. The main issues mostly come from differences in opinion. There are many things that SUS values that UFV doesn’t and vice versa. When in opposition to UFV, the SUS is often forced to back and forfeit their opinion. I won’t.

HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE THE ROLE OF THE PRESIDENT?

The role of president is to represent the student body and SUS. The president deals with a number of operations with clubs, events, food, shuttle bus services, as well as anything that can affect students. This means that I would deal with any concerns at all with students.

DISCUSS SUS’S COOPERATION WITH THE CANADIAN ALLIANCE OF STUDENT ASSOCIATIONS. IS IT AN IMPORTANT CONNECTION FOR THE UFVSUS? (KEEP IN MIND YOUR ROLE AS PRESIDENT IN THE COOPERATION WITH CASA)

The cooperation between SUS and CASA is very important. CASA support post-secondary students by helping groups like SUS all over Canada. Due to this information, the connection between with them is very much needed. It is good to maintain a healthy relationship with CASA.

CANDIDATE SPECIFIC QUESTIONS :

HARSH : Could you highlight some of the goals you would have for your term ?

My main goal is to have more campus life, and more involvement with all students. I constantly hear event organisers say “it’s not our fault students leave as soon as class ends” as an excuse as to why not many people care for a lot of events. I believe UFV has a lot of good that isn’t being showcased. The events are usually well planned and thought out and there’s a lot of great clubs to join too. I hope to make create more exposure for these rather than putting up a few posters that no one looks at. My other hope is to listen to students when the express their struggles with reoccurring issues that often get overlooked or remain unresolved.

GENERAL QUESTIONS :

WHAT IS YOUR ELEVATOR PITCH FOR STUDENTS ON WHY THEY SHOULD VOTE FOR YOU?

I’m an incredibly involved student around campus and love what I do. From student life, athletics, ufv international, senate, sasi and so on, I’ve made a point to explore each area. When I was in this position previously, I had started up many projects for the society. We had no previous work I could build on. Some notable ones include the work that was done on sexualized violence policies, and mental health. This year a key part of my platform is to hear from you so I can direct our advocacy efforts towards what matters most to ufv students.

OUTLINE BRIEFLY HOW YOU WOULD BEGIN ADVOCATING ON BEHALF OF UFVSUS AND THE STUDENTS.

I would begin by getting student input on the priorities list that SUS receives from ABCS and CASA, our advocacy groups at the provincial and federal levels. The selected priorities are then researched and developed into an ask which we bring to the government. For student concerns at the institutional level, I would bring them to the appropriate group. In this position, the VPE meets monthly with the VP Academic of UFV which is where I would have these conversations. How I’d advocate on behalf of UFVSUS and students is also dependent on what I’m advocating for.

SHOULD SUS BE A PART OF BOTH THE BC FEDERATION OF STUDENTS AND CANADIAN ALLIANCE OF STUDENT ASSOCIATIONS?

I believe that our membership with CASA is valuable and it’s important in order to strengthen the collective student voice, however, many of our concerns as post secondary students at ufv don’t necessarily fit at the federal level but rather the provincial level. I’m neutral towards our membership with CASA. I wouldn’t suggest leaving though since our students benefit from their work. I wouldn’t encourage SUS to be part of BCFS. Though good work has been done by the group, I believe that BCFS is not for us. We can be more productive with our current provincial partner, ABCS.

IN BRIEF, OUTLINE A COUPLE KEY POINTS IN YOUR PLATFORM AND HOW YOU WILL REALIZE THESE GOALS.

My key goals for this year are to follow up with my previous projects, advocate for international students and use student input to guide our advocacy efforts. To expand on my points, my previous projects include the work on sexual violence policy review, a potential for a partial fall reading break, and more. For international students I plan to push UFV to remove the current set fee structure requiring international students to pay for a full 15 credits and instead pay per credit. To involve students in my advocacy efforts I’d like to add a page to our website, incorporate surveys as well as host meetings for students to attend, join online or later watch.

IN 30 WORDS OR LESS, GIVE US A FINAL PITCH WHY STUDENTS SHOULD VOTE FOR YOU.

I’ve been in student council before and had several long term projects in the works. I’m passionate and enthusiastic about getting the opportunity to advocate for you again.

GENERAL QUESTIONS :

WHAT IS YOUR ELEVATOR PITCH FOR STUDENTS ON WHY THEY SHOULD VOTE FOR YOU?

First off, I want to encourage everyone to vote, no matter who you plan to vote for. However, I can say with confidence that I am your best choice for the VPE position. I know what I am doing; I have more experience on the SUS Board than any other candidates in this election and I am well connected. I do not make empty promises, nor do I have any interest in unrealistic goals. I have proven to the student body that I get real results. Vote Andrew Stahl for high integrity and German efficiency.

OUTLINE BRIEFLY HOW YOU WOULD BEGIN ADVOCATING ON BEHALF OF UFVSUS AND THE STUDENTS.

My first priority is to review and communicate with the university’s VP students regarding UFV’s promise to reform its sexualized violence prevention policy. I would also like to act on issues brought to me by students and work with my fellow colleagues to achieve results. Further, if there is any sign of corruption--of any type and on any level—a heavy hand will be raised to purge it. Finally, I will fulfill the VPE daily and monthly duties with proficiency.

SHOULD SUS BE A PART OF BOTH THE BC FEDERATION OF STUDENTS AND CANADIAN ALLIANCE OF STUDENT ASSOCIATIONS?

Given that our partnership with these two groups has been effective and successful so far, it makes logical sense to stay with them, especially because we are pushing for student grant funding this year. Honestly, as the SUS College of Arts Representative, I have been personally on the fence about it for a while. Sometimes it seems like we get results, but oftentimes we don’t. The benefits that come from our membership in the BC Fed. of Students and the Canadian Alliance of Stud. Assocs. depend highly on the current Provincial and Federal governments; in other words, the governments voted in at the time.

CANDIDATE SPECIFIC QUESTIONS :

(ANDREW) You want to run events like Battle of the Bands. Explain in brief how you would work this into your role as VP External.

Traditionally, an event like Battle of the Bands (BOTB) doesn’t fit into the VPE role. However, such an event engages students on multiple levels; hosting a BOTB encourages students to engage not only in campus culture, but also in our university’s politics. This is where I come in, as the VPE is responsible for political matters. I strive to utilize my political experience to make politics engaging. One way of accomplishing this is by creating exciting events that also showcase our campus’s political avenues. To make BOTB a reality, we could connect with local venues that host open mic nights (like SippChai Café), bands from our own campus, and freelance artists. Clearly, such an event requires political action and communication.

CONCLUDING STATEMENT :

In 30 words or less, give us a final pitch why students should vote for you

A vote to Andrew Stahl is a vote to giving a crap about your student experience.

  • In your own words, describe what the position of VPI entails.
  • What are the skills and capabilities you possess that will allow you to execute this technical position successfully?

Read the candidate's answers

GENERAL QUESTIONS :

IN YOUR OWN WORDS, DESCRIBE WHAT THE POSITION OF VPI ENTAILS.

The VPI Internal is the treasurer and secretary of the society. What this means is that I handle a lot of the financials, working closely alongside the Finance officer, as well as the policies of SUS. I present revisions or additions to bylaws to the SUS board, which then can either approve or reject my proposals. The VPI’s role is also to make sure that the Society is running well…internally. In essence, I am the boring numbers guy who makes sure everyone is following the rules.

WHAT ARE THE SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES YOU POSSESS THAT WILL ALLOW YOU TO EXECUTE THIS TECHNICAL POSITION SUCCESSFULLY?

I think that the records on SUS’s website are frankly horrendous. Its difficult to find proper reports on areas like financials and there is just a complete and utter lack of electoral records! No institution or administration built on democratic ideals can justify such a lack of transparency. Students have a right to know and understand how SUS is operating and spending their fees and I plan on enforcing that right.

DEFINE YOUR “FIDUCIARY RESPONSIBILITY” TO THE STUDENT UNION SOCIETY.

Having a fiduciary responsibility to something basically means I have a legal and moral obligation to serve that thing to the best of my abilities. It implies total confidentiality in matters of a confidential nature, I cannot take advantage of the resources at my disposal as an executive to better my own personal situation, etc. So, having a fiduciary responsibility to SUS means that I have a legal and ethical duty to see that your student fees are invested wisely and benefit you in the most utilitarian fashion, which is exactly what I plan to do.

PLEASE COMMENT ON WAYS POLICY RELEVANT TO THE VPI ACTUALLY AFFECT THE STUDENT BODY.

An easier question might be what “VPI policies do NOT affect the student body?” Being the treasurer and secretary of a society with over three million dollars in annual revenue is a large role, with even larger consequences for its membership. While some policies, such as Clubs and Associations funding, may seem small in impact and isolated to that particular area, they can have huge financial ramifications when looking at the budgetary constraints SUS is faced with. Policy will affect every aspect of your life that intersects with SUS - like transportation to school, guest speakers at UFV events, even scholarships. This is why picking someone who understands what the role is as well as its responsibility is absolutely vital, and I hope that my answers have provided satisfactory evidence that I am that someone.

CONCLUDING STATEMENT :

In 30 words or less, give us a final pitch why students should vote for you

There are a lot of problems that need fixing at SUS, but there is also a lot of good. My goal, if elected, will be to showcase how SUS works for YOU. Remember, if its your money, its your choice!

GENERAL QUESTIONS :

WHAT MAKES YOU THE MOST QUALIFIED CANDIDATE FOR THE POSITION?

I doubt any of us can be considered most qualified. All of the candidates appear to have similar goals; make the on campus experience better, foster community and encourage student engagement. I decided to run for VPS for these reasons in one form or another. I’m not familiar with the other candidates enough to say that I am a better option than they are. However, as your VPS I would be a communal, supportive, reasonable and flexible leader who would work with all the candidates running to ensure SUS moves forward in a way we all see.

IF YOU COULD ONLY GET ONE PROJECT OR EVENT DONE THE ENTIRE TERM, WHAT WOULD IT BE? (CONSIDER THIS YOUR LEGACY QUESTION)

Choosing one thing is difficult as I am running to fix many things. A broad goal of mine is to see active clubs, associations, and students. I want a better community for UFV. If I had to reduce it to one specific project it would include a streamlined process for students to create, manage, and maintain student organizations. Students should be able to gather with ease and as little bureaucratic interference and red tape as possible. Making space, organization, and funding for clubs, associations, and student events as easily attainable and accessible as possible.

HOW SPECIFICALLY WOULD YOU IMPROVE COMMUNICATION BETWEEN SUS AND THE STUDENT BODY?

Simply and specifically, I would be available for students and have available time for students to come to me with ideas, problems, etc. on an open and ongoing basis. This would include many things such as having my door open, having open meetings with those who want it, and hosting events where communication and team-building of SUS members, students and club and association leaders and members, and student life representatives can get together and engage. Simply, I intend to be there and be available.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO TO GROW AND DEVELOP CLUBS AND ASSOCIATIONS ON CAMPUS ?

The bureaucratic road blocks involved in running and maintaining clubs and associations is, in my opinion, excessive and unnecessary. Students wanting to organize around something they’re passionate about and that have the drive to do so should be able to spend more time doing what they love rather than dealing with excessive and unnecessary organizational structures. I fully intend (as VPS or not) to ensure an easy and simple process, with as little paperwork, forms, etc. as possible so students can get together quickly and easily.

CANDIDATE SPECIFIC QUESTIONS :

(TYLER) Speaking from your experience creating the Philosophy Association, upon which areas do you believe UFVSUS needs to improve ?

In creating PHILUFV, I spent about 80% my time organizing, planning events, meetings, constitutions, and dealing with two bureaucratic structures to register the association. It was unclear, messy, and excessive. All for about 20% of actual engagement in philosophy. When this is the ratio for engagement, it’s no surprise that student engagement is low. SUS should be working together with UFV for C&A and eliminating overlap, working together to make the C&A process quick, easy, and rewarding, and getting students engaging with what they love rather than going through a crash course on bureaucracy. Students also need space to organize and meet and SUS is wasting rooms on storage, rather than allowing student use.

CONCLUDING STATEMENT :

In 30 words or less, give us a final pitch why students should vote for you

Everything I want to fix at SUS I have experienced myself. You can rest assured knowing I will do everything I can to improve SUS for students. Elected or not.

GENERAL QUESTIONS :

WHAT MAKES YOU THE MOST QUALIFIED CANDIDATE FOR THE POSITION?

I feel I am the most qualified candidate as I have experience in management, and I have been part of clubs and associations at the school. I work hard to understand others and I am a problem solver so I believe I could bring the work ethic and connections necessary to benefit and further support our clubs and associations. What sets me apart from others is that I see this position as being something beyond managing the clubs and associations; it is an opportunity to create real community for our students.

IF YOU COULD ONLY GET ONE PROJECT OR EVENT DONE THE ENTIRE TERM, WHAT WOULD IT BE? (CONSIDER THIS YOUR LEGACY QUESTION)

I would implement the PASS program into our C&As and make it so that students have greater access to mental health support. I see the C&As as a safe spaces that students go to connect with peers, and I believe that they create great opportunities for students to really get to see each other and understand how they’re doing. Being a student can be stressful and in times of need I want C&As to become a place for students to feel safe, supported, and get access to the services they need.

HOW SPECIFICALLY WOULD YOU IMPROVE COMMUNICATION BETWEEN SUS AND THE STUDENT BODY?

I would work to get myCampusLife more widely known and used among students. I know many students are unaware this exists and are unsure how to use it but if given the opportunity I would work to make it a more widely known and used platform similarly to the familiarity shared with Blackboard. I would do this by working with C&As to make sure their executives are experts on it so they can continue to pass down their knowledge and get their members using it.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO TO GROW AND DEVELOP CLUBS AND ASSOCIATIONS ON CAMPUS ?

To develop clubs and associations on campus I would work on creating events for people not associated with C&As to attend. This is a two-part development as it would benefit clubs by creating networking events for them to reach out and meet new people, and secondly it would grow community on campus and make people feel like they want to be more involved. This would be achieved by creating fun spaces for everyone to interact thus benefitting everyone.

CANDIDATE SPECIFIC QUESTIONS :

WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE TO IMPLEMENT A CRISIS SUPPORT MODEL WITHIN C&AS ?

To implement a crisis support model I would ensure training for all C&A executives, through Student Life and various other programs at the school I have seen seminars and speakers come and share their insight and information: I would have similar training seminars and share free online courses, such as the Mental Health Literacy online course at UBC that would teach the executives how to talk about and identify those in crisis. This implementation would be a long time so while it would be developing, I would start with a shorter-term, more immediate implementation of a mental health care plan as a trial procedure that would lead into the larger scale crisis support program such as PASS.

CONCLUDING STATEMENT :

In 30 words or less, give us a final pitch why students should vote for you

I ask for your vote as I know our campus needs community and support. I want to create opportunities and help our C&As develop into something bigger. Thank you.

GENERAL QUESTIONS :

WHAT MAKES YOU THE MOST QUALIFIED CANDIDATE FOR THE POSITION?

I am an international student taking 5 courses and working two jobs, so I understand the various struggles of students from experience. When I came here, I was expecting a great student culture but was disappointed. I went to the Student union building to voice my concerns but decided to take the matters in my hand. I started to volunteer for the student life and international department through which I facilitated a lot of events and got the chance to listen to the issues concerning both domestic and international students and do something about them. My ability to represent students both international and domestic and take initiative about the issues makes me the most qualified candidate.

IF YOU COULD ONLY GET ONE PROJECT OR EVENT DONE THE ENTIRE TERM, WHAT WOULD IT BE? (CONSIDER THIS YOUR LEGACY QUESTION)

The project I hope to accomplish this term is to eradicate the stigma surrounding mental health as well as make support accessible for students who may be struggling. As of now, students seeking help may wait up to a month to have an appointment with a counselor on campus. This creates an overall negative experience for students who finally gain the courage to seek help. While this is my primary focus, combatting the issue of waitlist’s at UFV is a very close secondary project I would like to dedicate some time to acknowledge and hopefully improve. As far too many students are impacted by it.

HOW SPECIFICALLY WOULD YOU IMPROVE COMMUNICATION BETWEEN SUS AND THE STUDENT BODY?

I plan to improve the communication between SUS and the student body by providing more incentives to students. The contributions of students would be recognized and encouraged by introducing awards such as “volunteer of the year/semester”. I am also planning to set up a booth once a month where students can share what they feel about SUS. If a student has an idea that can be implemented, they will get regular updates on them. Finally, my door would remain open for any student facing a problem.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO TO GROW AND DEVELOP CLUBS AND ASSOCIATIONS ON CAMPUS ?

I plan to grow the clubs and associations by making it easier for students to start one. It has come to my attention that Clubs and associations have difficulty finding and allocating resources such as money and space reservations for their events. I would like to improve this by looking into what’s making it hard for them to find these resources and how they can properly utilize them. I would also like to encourage the students to start clubs by helping them promote them and providing various incentives.

CANDIDATE SPECIFIC QUESTIONS :

(PRABHPREET) Please outline how you would actively work to steer UFV away from a ‘commuter culture campus’

I would actively work to steer UFV away from a ‘commuter culture campus’ by consistently offering social events every month. This would include a series of various activities such as back to school barbeque, culture sharing events, a half marathon, inter-department sports tournament, etc. I would also like to invite experts from different areas to facilitate workshops like salsa, drawing, painting, kickboxing, etc. These workshops may also hire fellow UFV students who have a strong passion or talent in which they would like to teach other students. This can effectively boost the morale of both students who are learning and those who are teaching.

GENERAL QUESTIONS :

WHAT MAKES YOU THE MOST QUALIFIED CANDIDATE FOR THE POSITION?

One of my favorite parts of being a student at UFV is the wide variety of free events to attend and clubs and associations to be a part of. I have enjoyed and appreciated all the opportunities to hear speakers and take part in important discussion around issues we all face in this day in age. Through my work as the Gender Equality Commissioner, I have learned how to plan, organize and implement workshops and bring in relevant speakers. This is an essential job for the Vice Presidents of Students and one that I love to do.

IF YOU COULD ONLY GET ONE PROJECT OR EVENT DONE THE ENTIRE TERM, WHAT WOULD IT BE? (CONSIDER THIS YOUR LEGACY QUESTION)

My dream project I would love to accomplish as Vice President of Students is to host an action-packed full day for International Women’s Day 2021. The week leading up to the event, workshops and speakers about gender equality issues globally and in our every day lives. I would love to involve the faculties as well to make this a university wide event that would attract the local community and businesses to get involved. Also, I plan to continue on with the’ Go With the Flow’ campaign that I took part in.

HOW SPECIFICALLY WOULD YOU IMPROVE COMMUNICATION BETWEEN SUS AND THE STUDENT BODY?

How many times have you said to yourself, “I didn’t know that was happening on campus”, and missed an opportunity to be a part of something that interested you? I know I have and trying to keep up with all the events hosted by the different organizations here on campus is hard to do. SUS can be the one stop shop hub for all events going on for all students around UFV. I look forward to making a viable communication network between all the great activities happening here on campus and the ability to access them through a SUS interactive kiosk or portal.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO TO GROW AND DEVELOP CLUBS AND ASSOCIATIONS ON CAMPUS ?

I would attend a meeting with each club to check out what they are up too and what they need for support. There are currently 23 clubs and associations here at UFV. There is funding available through SUS for events put on by all clubs and associations that I would be happy to help with. I want to make these clubs and associations more visible and create an environment for more clubs to appear. Finding a place where you feel you matter, and your voice is heard, is integral to an inclusive campus here at UFV and important to me.

CANDIDATE SPECIFIC QUESTIONS :

CONSIDERING YOUR EXPERIENCE SWITCHING PROGRAMS/MAJORS, PLEASE COMMENT ON SOME OF THE STRUGGLES YOU HAVE FOUND FACING STUDENTS ACROSS DEPARTMENTS.

My biggest struggle switching majors, was grasping the difference in expectations from the Sciences to the Arts. The Sciences are straight forward, black/white with factual clear-cut information, while the Arts are about my own interpretations. What my instructors expected from me from the Sciences was completely different than in the Arts. Changing your mind halfway through your degree can be daunting but asking questions was key. Where do I start, what will I get credit for, who can help me? I was lucky to find a helpful advisor here at UFV for help and direction. When talking to other students who are struggling, I always suggest visiting the Advising Center. And it’s never too late to change your mind!

CONCLUDING STATEMENT :

In 30 words or less, give us a final pitch why students should vote for you

As VPS I would like to make SUS a part of your family. A foundation to stand on and support you with your journey here at UFV. Stay Safe Everyone! sam_smithj@hotmail.com

GENERAL QUESTIONS :

HOW WOULD YOU PERSONALLY DEFINE THE ROLE OF A BOARD REPRESENTATIVE? (THIS IS A CHANCE TO BE A BIT CREATIVE/ FLASHY)

A Board Representative is responsible for bringing awareness to student issues in their departments while still acting in the best interests of the Society. The Board Representative also carries the Duty of Care and Loyalty: to provide the finest service to their organization. As a Board Representative, it is essential to act honestly and in good faith, both characteristics that I have acquired through my community leadership roles. If I were elected as the Health Sciences Representative, I will ensure the Health Sciences department’s concerns are addressed at the SUS Board meetings.

WHY IS THE ROLE OF THE BOARD IMPORTANT TO UFVSUS?

The UFVSUS Board ensures that the organization has a clear mission and that all campus activities support the mission. The Board is responsible for the organization’s assets and resources. Board Representatives organize monthly reports that address student concerns and faculty updates. Monthly board meetings establish an efficient strategy in favour of student interests. Conclusively, the Board is of utmost importance because it carries the power to mitigate student problems.

HOW WOULD YOU ENSURE THE VOICE OF ALL STUDENTS IN YOUR POSITION’S DEMOGRAPHIC ARE HEARD?

As the Health Sciences Representative, I will always consider what is in the best interests of the faculty’s students and administration. In collaboration with students, I will ensure students have the required resources available for a convenient learning environment. By partaking in the faculty’s clubs and events, I will have the opportunity to understand student’s concerns and faithfully address these issues at the SUS Board. If there are matters that need to be urgently discussed, I am always willing to meet students or communicate via email. In these manners, I will ensure the Health Sciences Student’s voices will be heard.

GENERAL QUESTIONS :

HOW WOULD YOU PERSONALLY DEFINE THE ROLE OF A BOARD REPRESENTATIVE? (THIS IS A CHANCE TO BE A BIT CREATIVE/ FLASHY)

A Board Representative holds the SUS executive team accountable and represents the student bodies interests/concerns within their specific academic field. From my experience this last term, a board member provides key insight and suggestion for the board as the executive team may be limited at reaching the student bodies interests with their limited time and other duties. In addition, a board member is also a point person to provide information regarding SUS to the rest of the student body within it’s field.

WHY IS THE ROLE OF THE BOARD IMPORTANT TO UFVSUS?

Board members hold the executive team accountable to accomplish things that align with student interests. Without this accountability, it’s possible that UFVSUS could operate outside of it’s intended mission to serve students. In addition, the insight provided by representatives can help guide UFVSUS to better serve students and achieve it’s intended goals towards the student body.

HOW WOULD YOU ENSURE THE VOICE OF ALL STUDENTS IN YOUR POSITION’S DEMOGRAPHIC ARE HEARD?

Consistently being in contact with the clubs and associations within my faculty and seeking to hear from students in my day to day business. I also hope to launch a student survey for the university to gauge which services are most useful or not useful for the student body, and what they would like to see SUS do for them. In addition to this, I intend to be open and approachable for students to ask questions, raise concerns or give suggestions for anything regarding SUS that falls within my jurisdiction as their representative.

GENERAL QUESTIONS :

HOW WOULD YOU PERSONALLY DEFINE THE ROLE OF A BOARD REPRESENTATIVE? (THIS IS A CHANCE TO BE A BIT CREATIVE/ FLASHY)

I would define the role of a Board Representative as someone who helps make key decisions alongside others to lead the organization in the right direction and help achieve its goals. The Student Union Society Board Representatives voice the key ideas and thoughts of the individuals in the faculty they are representing.

WHY IS THE ROLE OF THE BOARD IMPORTANT TO UFVSUS?

The role of the Board is important to UFVSUS because it keeps the organization accountable. Also, UFV’s diverse population of students are represented by having board members from different faculties help deliver decisions. Overall, having a board helps express the thoughts and opinions of students at UFV to help create a better experience.

HOW WOULD YOU ENSURE THE VOICE OF ALL STUDENTS IN YOUR POSITION’S DEMOGRAPHIC ARE HEARD?

I will be openly accessible to all students through various forms of communication. These forms of communication will include face-to-face interactions, email, and Instagram. I will present the SUS board with feedback I have received from students to make sure their voice is being heard. As the Professional Studies Representative, I will ensure the students in my faculty are heard and benefitted from Board decisions.

GENERAL QUESTIONS :

HOW WOULD YOU PERSONALLY DEFINE THE ROLE OF A BOARD REPRESENTATIVE? (THIS IS A CHANCE TO BE A BIT CREATIVE/ FLASHY)

A SUS Board Representative brings student experiences and concerns to life by advocating for students at SUS Board meetings, whether you are the College of Arts, Sciences, or Professional Studies Representative. A Board Representative should be respectful, professional, and logical, which are qualities I possess. Already being a member of the SUS Board, if elected, I will continue bringing fresh ideas, raising awareness to student issues, and holding the SUS accountable to ensure transparency.

WHY IS THE ROLE OF THE BOARD IMPORTANT TO UFVSUS?

The SUS Board is the highest oversighting body of the UFVSUS which ensures the organization is prospering, meeting its goals, and managing in accordance with its mandate. Elected board members make sure that student perspectives and interests are represented in Board decisions. In addition, Board Representatives submit monthly reports which include updates, perspectives, and issues that are important to decision-making by the Board. Ultimately, the Board keeps the SUS moving in a strategic direction which has the main focus to serve students.

HOW WOULD YOU ENSURE THE VOICE OF ALL STUDENTS IN YOUR POSITION’S DEMOGRAPHIC ARE HEARD?

As the College of Arts Board Representative, I will collaborate with students in this faculty, whether it be in the classroom or attending events. I will be communicating actively with various clubs and associations under this faculty to make the SUS Board aware of their goals and recent activities. In these ways, I will ensure the voice of this demographic is heard. I will make decisions based on equity and fairness. As always, I will act in the best interests of the SUS, while holding the union accountable so that students are benefitting from all decisions.

SPECIFIC QUESTIONS - CONTESTED POSITIONS :

(COLLEGE OF ARTS REP) Discuss your experiences on campus and in the student body that make you qualified to act as the College of Arts Representative. What personal qualities make you a winning candidate in this position?

am a third-year student-athlete studying Criminology and Criminal Justice. I play on the UFV Women’s Soccer Team and am the current SUS President (2019-20). I advocate for the entire student demographic, represent you on a provincial and federal level, and always act in the best interest of students. In the past at UFV, I worked as a Peer Supporter for international students. Currently, I am a member of the College of Arts Council, which has allowed me to gain many experiences.
As the College of Arts Representative, I will transfer my skills gained at UFV by mentoring and providing support to the Board, while having a united Board represent all UFV students.

GENERAL QUESTIONS :

HOW WOULD YOU PERSONALLY DEFINE THE ROLE OF A BOARD REPRESENTATIVE? (THIS IS A CHANCE TO BE A BIT CREATIVE/ FLASHY)

I see board representatives as having two intertwined roles, to be the voice of the students to the Student Union, while also being the voice of the Student Union to the students. They advocate for both to strengthen each other. They act as the voice of the student so that SUS acts in their best interest, and also advocate for SUS so that students utilize the benefits that SUS offers them to the best of their abilities. Many of the programs that SUS offers go under utilized, and I hope that with better communication that can change.

WHY IS THE ROLE OF THE BOARD IMPORTANT TO UFVSUS?

Board members play an important role in SUS because they’re role is admittedly smaller. They are not as engrossed in daily SUS affairs as executives are, and are more capable of keeping an objective viewpoint with the interests of everyday students in mind.

HOW WOULD YOU ENSURE THE VOICE OF ALL STUDENTS IN YOUR POSITION’S DEMOGRAPHIC ARE HEARD?

I would ensure the voice of all students is heard through always being available and open to communication. I spend a lot of my time on campus, and am easily recognizable. Through my work with Student life I get to interact with a variety of students on a regular basis, and would use that as an opportunity to hear their voices and get their opinion on issues.

SPECIFIC QUESTIONS - CONTESTED POSITIONS :

(College OF ARTS REP) Discuss your experiences on campus and in the student body that make you qualified to act as the College of Arts Representative. What personal qualities make you a winning candidate in this position?

As previously mentioned I spend a lot of time on campus, I play active roles in clubs, and work and volunteer at the Student Life department, helping with the Leadership Program and the Peer Resource and Leadership Centre. These roles have given me insight and understanding into the issues that face everyday students. I’ve made connections with students whom I otherwise wouldn’t have come into contact with. I’m approachable, friendly, and am usually easy to spot hanging around the Student Union Building. I’m already a recognizable figure on campus, and I would love the opportunity to expand my role to help even more students.
