NDP MLA & Advanced Education Critic in the B.C. legislature Michelle Mungall met with your SUS at AfterMath social house on the Abbotsford Campus last Friday to touch base with UFV on a number of issues!

The discussion included:

1 – MLA Mungall’s concern over government proposed bill and changes to policy of a University’s Board of Governors allowing to vote out student members of the board by a 2/3 vote;

2 – her concern that B.C. Minister of Advanced Education Naomi has not released her report on student loans in B.C.; 3 – the fact that B.C. students have the highest interest rate in the country on student loans and the highest average amount of student debt; that if students want to get their voice heard, they need to send lots and lots of letters to the B.C. Minister of Higher Education’s office;

and

4 – the problem that student debt is getting too high due to the cost of going to school rising.

Your SUS had a great time meeting everyone at the UFV Tailgate Party, Friday September 9.
The Cascades Varsity Men’s Basketball team fought a great fight against the Santa Clara Broncos, losing 87-84 in OT.
For the 2011-2012 year, SUS members’ admission is covered by the SUS for all Cascades Varsity home games at the Envision Athletic Centre on the Abbotsford Campus.

The Governments of Canada and British Columbia are in the process of integrating their full-time student financial assistance programs – Canada Student Loans Program and StudentAid BC.

Integration will improve the borrowers’ experience throughout the loan lifecycle. The new streamlined system will simplify the borrowing process by building a ”one student, one loan” model.
